Developed in collaboration with RE Butler and Snell David Architects, the Waterlilies project showcases a highly refined and architectural balustrade design centred around the bespoke Dover Spindle.
Designed to appear as a single monolithic form, each spindle is meticulously fabricated from three 50 x 6mm steel uprights, carefully assembled using concealed welds and precision finishing techniques. The result is a strikingly clean profile with crisp, sharp corners and uninterrupted lines that emphasise the purity of the design.
Set against the warmth of the oak staircase and interior joinery, the dark steel spindles create a subtle yet powerful architectural feature, providing rhythm, depth and visual continuity throughout the home. Every element was manufactured and installed to exacting standards, ensuring precise alignment and a flawless finish throughout the project.
Dover Spindle | An Monolithic Form
The Dover Spindle was developed to challenge conventional balustrade design by creating the appearance of a solid architectural element while maintaining elegance and transparency.
Formed from three individual steel sections, each spindle requires exceptional fabrication accuracy to achieve the clean junctions, hidden welds and razor-sharp geometry that define the design. The minimalist detailing allows the craftsmanship to speak for itself, creating a balustrade that feels both contemporary and timeless.
Working closely with RE Butler and Snell David Architects, Thomas Brenton delivered a bespoke staircase installation that seamlessly integrates metalwork, timber and architecture into one cohesive design statement.
