Created in collaboration with the renowned interior design studio Banda Design, Ashburn House showcases a bespoke staircase developed around what has since become one of Thomas Brenton’s signature designs, the Ashburn Spindle.
Originally conceived as a completely bespoke casting for this project, the spindle combines classical proportions with a contemporary silhouette, creating a design that feels both timeless and distinctive. The elegant cast iron forms add rhythm and character to the staircase whilst maintaining a refined and understated presence within the interior.
Paired with a sweeping handcrafted timber handrail, the balustrade follows the tight turns and complex geometry of the staircase with remarkable fluidity. The result is a staircase that feels effortless in appearance whilst demanding exceptional craftsmanship in both manufacture and installation.
The Ashburn Spindle
What began as a unique commission has evolved into one of our most popular spindle designs. The Ashburn Spindle features a carefully balanced cast form that introduces subtle decorative interest without overwhelming the architecture around it.
Each spindle is individually manufactured and finished before being integrated into the staircase, creating a consistent and elegant visual language throughout the property. The design works equally well within classical and contemporary interiors, making it a versatile choice for bespoke residential projects.
A Free-Flowing Handrail
One of the defining features of this staircase is the continuous timber handrail, which flows seamlessly around tight bends, sweeping turns and multiple changes in direction.
Unlike a conventional balustrade, where the handrail is often supported independently, the timber handrail on this project was fitted directly to the top of each spindle. This approach creates an exceptionally clean appearance while demanding meticulous detailing and precise manufacturing to ensure every spindle aligns perfectly with the flowing handrail above.
The result is a staircase that appears effortless, with uninterrupted lines that guide the eye gracefully through the space.
